ABOUT

02

Empowering Yemeni civil society through feminist leadership, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and locally-driven solutions.

Founded in 2011, Itar for Social Development is a Yemeni feminist organization dedicated to strengthening civil society through gender-responsive advocacy, peacebuilding, and digital innovation. Over the past decade, we have implemented transformative projects like the "Piloting Displaced Women’s and Girls’ Humanitarian-Peace Dialogue" (2020-2023) and the "Localization Advocacy Platform" (2023), partnering with UN Women, WPHF, and local CSOs. Our work bridges humanitarian, development, and peace processes while amplifying marginalized voices.

Guided by our 2024-2025 Strategic Plan, we prioritize transformative capacity development, digital platforms like Mahlia Network, and coalition-building with partners such as Bena Foundation and Thakera for Documentation. Our team of experts, including Chairwoman Wameedh Shakir (20+ years in UN gender initiatives), leverages local knowledge and global partnerships to foster resilient communities and inclusive governance in conflict-affected Yemen.

OUR JOURNEY

08

Transforming Yemen through feminist leadership and community-driven solutions

Founded in 2011 during Yemen's Arab Spring, Itar emerged as a feminist response to political exclusion. Our early work focused on documenting women's roles in pro-democracy movements while building partnerships with academic institutions like LSE.

Post-2015 conflict escalation, we pivoted to humanitarian-peace nexus programming. Through consortium models and digital innovation, we've amplified 70+ CSOs' voices in national policy debates while maintaining gender-responsive programming across 14 governorates.
